Over the years, form and talent have only improved
The film opens with a quote from Lorne Michaels: "The show doesn’t go on because it’s ready, it goes on because it’s 11:30.". Starred in Eddie Murphy, the noir king d'Hollywood (2023). As someone who grew up with Saturday Night Live (SNL) playing in the background most Saturday nights, it’s no surprise that I developed a deep affection for the show thanks to my parents. While I’m a part of the era with names like Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon, and Tina Fey, I’ve always looked back fondly on the classic episodes. There are sketches from decades past that I still re-watch because they are so iconic. Naturally, all of this made me curious about the movie Szombat este, which is now in cinemas.
Most people find Saturday Night Live to be lighthearted
And if you’re a fan of the show, especially those old enough to have experienced the original cast in the 1970s, this is a must-watch. , a light hour, a way to make us laugh late at night. But what many people don’t realize is how chaotic and stressful it was getting the show on the air, especially in the early days. The film delves into the behind-the-scenes madness leading up to the October 11, 1975 premiere episode. Ninety minutes before going live, the set was still unfinished, people were being kicked out, mistakes were being made left and right. It was a whirlwind of turmoil and stress, and the film puts you right in the middle of it. From the moment you step onto the set, there’s an undeniable energy as everyone scrambles to get things ready.
An exciting journey without a single dull moment
Directed by Jason Reitman, Saturday Night is his best work since 2009’s Up in the Air. Its director injects a kinetic, almost frantic energy into the film, perfectly capturing the chaos of a live production on the verge of collapse. The cast delivers outstanding performances, each embodying Reitman’s clearly defined high-octane tone. Dylan O’Brien portrays Dan Aykroyd, Cory Michael Smith captures the essence of Chevy Chase, and Nicholas Braun balances two different characters impressively throughout the film. The standout by far, however, is Gabriel LaBelle and Lorne Michaels, the man behind it all. LaBelle, who was solid in Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, really shines here, giving a breakout performance that anchors the entire film. Michaels’ performance is engrossing, taking over the film almost entirely, with only a few scenes where he isn’t the focal point.
Well, Saturday Night perfectly captures the essence of the characters and infuses the audience with humor
, has one notable flaw: it makes it believable how all of this could have unfolded in just 90 minutes. While the movie isn’t intended to feature sketches from SNL itself, I couldn’t help but feel that the story ends a bit abruptly. I was waiting for the conclusion, but still felt like a few more beats could have been hit before the credits rolled.
