So my expectations for this version were not high
Synopsis
Everyday life is a constant struggle for survival, but Maja does not give up. Despite all the setbacks, she stays in Stormskerry, where her roots are. The TV series of this story was released in 1975 and was a masterpiece. They said it was a modern Maja for our times.
How wrong I was!
Or maybe they would change the whole story? Perhaps the middle part of the film could have been shortened a bit, but apart from that the film was excellent. Maja was completely different here than she was 49 years ago. She was stronger, happier and had a greater sense of humour.
She was also funnier
I don’t know what kind of woman the real Maja was (yes, there was a real Maja and a real Janne!), but I think she must have been very similar to this Maja. The actors playing Maja and Janne were perfect. Some key scenes in this version were very different from the 1975 version, but they were no less moving. One of the most moving episodes of the 1975 version was here longer and more detailed and made a greater impression on me.
They couldn’t have done it in 1975
Director Tiina Lymi added details that were literally surprising but added to the beauty of the film. In one scene I really wondered what the director had in mind. This scene was one of the most powerful in the whole film, so Lymi knew what she was doing! The budget probably wouldn’t have allowed it.
Any scenes omitted from the new version didn’t harm the story, in my opinion
The events that moved me most in 1977 when I watched the series, took place in this version – different, but still very powerful.
