Synopsis
The city of New Rome faces a battle between Cesare Catilina, a brilliant artist who advocates for a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklin Cicero. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved in part due to financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001 after 30 hours of second unit shooting and table readings with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco and Kevin Spacey. the project was canceled after the 9/11 attacks because a scene from the script (page 166) “predicted”; attacks.

Coppola abandoned the project entirely in 2007 and only started developing it again in 2019. The security footage of Cicero entering Caesars office is supposed to be two different cameras, as the small text in the upper left corner suggests. I respect Coppola for that. The guy is a movie legend who just decided to throw all caution (and coherence) behind him and go crazy with it. It’s a beautiful, unfiltered mess from the mind of a genius who has clearly stopped caring what anyone thinks. 👏🏻.
