Lee Miller: [Hands a knife to the girl he just saved from rape] Next time, cut it. The end credits include an explanation of “what happened”; and several of Lee’s original photographs, often along with those recreated for the film. I was really excited to see Kate Winslet in this passion project and of course she always delivers excellent performances and the direction is definitely well done and offers a unique perspective on WWII.
Apparently his role was cut for good reasons as it was a poor choice and so many really good British actors could have captured their supposed chemistry
However, the focus on Lee Miller’s beginnings as a model and her artistic environment including Picasso and the elites is lacking with a brief introduction to the wasted Alexander Skars as a Brit who has no chemistry or anything unique to add which is a shame. On top of that the first half felt off and thank god Adam Sandberg adds some depth to the Nazi scenes especially the Holocaust although the toilet scene was over the top but with no understanding of the fashion and elite artistic audience Lee had come into contact with before, it makes no sense and seems out of place. Lee was an IT girl who was super cool and here she comes across as an older, boring fashion photographer without much of a spark or an evolution from It girl to WWII photographer with a similar spark.
Go in with low expectations and you will enjoy the film
The worst part of the film was the son’s interview scenes with his mother which have a terrible ending and try to create a synergy between Lee and her past which easily could have been handled better as it felt rushed and out of place. I’m going to leave out the spoiler because the ending is just weird but maybe that was the point of leaving a few paragraph lines to explain the decision. Regardless, this is a really great film and it’s always nice to see Kate Winslet shine as an actress, even if the script falls short that doesn’t take away from the great direction. 7 stars.
